I have a question; how do you make the invisible/transparent background?

On a mac you would open the image up and click on the select option. When you click it there should be a wand named "instant alpha" which you click and drag across the background, whats highlighted you dont want you click delete to delete it. On windows there are several ways to do it, in photoshop and others. If you are a windows user, tell me.
